Batik, Tie and Dye

This programme is designed to equip participants with such competencies as practical training experience and skills that will prepare them to establish small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in batik, tie and dye. The programme will be offered in various modes totalling 120 notional hours. It will be conducted over a period of six weeks at four hours per day.

Description

This programme is designed to equip participants with necessary competencies, such as practical training experience and the knowledge to understand entrepreneurship, with skills to prepare them for the establishment of Batik, Tie and Dye Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).  Participants will able to describe, and be acquainted with the basics of batik, tie and dye and its historical background. They will be provided with an overview of the South African textile sector and its role in a sustainable economy.  Introduced to elementary colour mixing theory, and will be able to interpret and combine colours in various ways with the knowledge of elementary dyes, pigments, and chemicals used in textile colouration.  

Participants will learn how to illustrate the design of a given theme sample on cardboard papers to be later created with the sample fabrics. Evidence of four different sample designs illustration is required Participants will learn Entrepreneurship and its various concepts. Participants will have the ability to describe who is an entrepreneur and to identify individual entrepreneurial skills.

Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate safe working practices in dyeing processes
  • Conduct batik, tie and dye processes
  • Produce samples using both batik, tie/dye techniques
  • Produce batik, tie and dye design with a length of fabric, present and display fabric sample.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of entrepreneurship

Assessment

For formative assessment and practice of skills, participants are provided with a practical set of exercises that must be completed as in- class activities
